The Kentucky Derby Festival

The two weeks preceding the first Saturday in May, are filled with events in Louisville related to the "greatest two minutes in sports", The Run for The Roses, The Kentucky Derby. Here in Louisville, Churchill Downs is host to a horse race that has been going on for more than a hundred years, and is the first jewel in the Triple Crown of racing. Leading up to the event, there are all manner of festivities, including a hot-air balloon race, a marathon, of course a parade, a bed race, a race of wine carrying servers, the United States' largest fireworks show, and many other things to get people in the party spirit.

The Kentucky Derby is host to over 100,000 people at the racetrack on the day itself, and is undeniably Louisville's claim to fame, next to the Louisville Slugger baseball bat.

The art world and women

I attended a program at the J. B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, tonight, which addressed the discrimination against women in the art world. I had always known that most of the "famous masters" whose works you see in museums are men, but never really thought that much about it, until tonight. There is a group of women, who've dubbed themselves the "Guerrilla Girls", whose mission is to raise the awareness of everyone concerning the lack of females recognized in art museums. They don masks resembling gorilla faces, to spice up the cause, and keep attention away from themselves, and on the program they present, which is funny, interesting, and eye-opening. Feminists they are, and they make light of the fact, while educating audiences with what women artists have to contribute. If you'd like to learn more about them, go here: Guerrilla Girls

Game Time!

I think the Yeti game has been making it's internet rounds the last few months, but I just wanted to let you all know, you can find it in my "Links" to the right, under "Game Time!". Click on the penguin, and then "play online". Pick one of three cool games.

Have fun!

What's your highest score, btw?

Poets' Corner

I would like some input from all of you who visit my blog here about contributing your own writing. I personally write a stray poem here and there, and would love to host an interactive area of this blog of mine devoted to the art. Anyone can feel free to submit a poem, or short story, for that matter, via email to me, and I will post it here. I will have a "comments" feature built-in so we can all share thoughts and ideas.

Please let me know if you're interested!

The best month of the year...

March is the month live theatre takes center stage in Louisville, via the Festival of New American Plays. Mainly funded by the Humana Corporation, this festival has produced many interesting plays over 25 years.

Tonight, I went to see one of these new plays, called Tall Grass Gothic. While I'm open to new and different perspectives, this particular play didn't hold my interest. It was bleak and dark-- good atmosphere set, but the emotional connection with the audience was very distant. I think I speak for most of the audience, insomuchas I felt a restlessness in the crowd, just wanting to get out of the auditorium and away from this mess. Perhaps that was the goal of the play. If so, it was certainly accomplished. I couldn't wait to leave the bleak scenes being played out in front of me.

Good theatre isn't necessarily pretty. But it engages you on a sensory level you may not normally feel. So, tonight, I can say this play affected me. --Not in a good way, but the point was to make an impression. And it did.

The four seasons

Something happens between the end February and the 1st of March. And this year, there was an extra day for things to brew. Whatever it is, March is an interesting month. It's always been the month I've had some new ways of looking at old things, and also some old ways of dealing with new things. On that note, I've introduced a new feature on my site.

"Restless Nights"

It is what it is. Just a way to express what I'm feeling at the moment, but I'd love to hear from other people. As always, comments are welcome. But, I'd also like to publish everybody's thoughts here. Email me, and I'll post your thoughts of the night(or day).
