The Kentucky Derby Festival

The two weeks preceding the first Saturday in May, are filled with events in Louisville related to the "greatest two minutes in sports", The Run for The Roses, The Kentucky Derby. Here in Louisville, Churchill Downs is host to a horse race that has been going on for more than a hundred years, and is the first jewel in the Triple Crown of racing. Leading up to the event, there are all manner of festivities, including a hot-air balloon race, a marathon, of course a parade, a bed race, a race of wine carrying servers, the United States' largest fireworks show, and many other things to get people in the party spirit.

The Kentucky Derby is host to over 100,000 people at the racetrack on the day itself, and is undeniably Louisville's claim to fame, next to the Louisville Slugger baseball bat.
